Art wonderful art

Members were treated to a fabulous display of talent on the evening of Sunday, 9 September during the College's second annual Art Competition.

The competition was ably organised by the President of the Student Executive, Brittany Muiznieks, with 57 photos entered in the photography section and 29 entrants in the painting and other section.  All submitted art was on display in the Valentine Common Room for Members to view immediately after our usual Formal Dinner on Sunday evening.

Competition judges were local artists and College Fellows, Pauline Bellamy and Lynn Taylor, who were also our guests at Formal Dinner. Prior to Dinner, the two judges spent 90 minutes viewing the art and making their decisions, which they said was very challenging indeed given the high quality of work entered in the competition.

Lynn, who judged the photo section, said she was "so impressed with the superb array of images which ranged from nature, people and activities" and she "could see a sense of adventuring was required in taking these photos. There is a professional quality to all the works which you should be proud of."

Laura Cullen won the photography section with a photo captioned "Office hours". The painting section was won by Jessica Kirton-Luxford with her painting titled "Lantern in the dark".  Jessica also won the People's Choice Award for her paintings (she submitted three).

Other prize winners in the competition were:

  • 2nd place (painting) - Chi Yen Hwang
  • 3rd place (painting) - Xavier Parackal
  • People's choice (painting) - Jessica Kirton-Luxford
  • Merit (painting) - Glenys Loke and Shadrina Assegaf
  • 2nd place (photography) - Devyn Fowles
