Matariki Foodbank Appeal: Kai for Octacan, the spirit of winter giving

Kai for Octacan is the Presbyterian Support Otago’s major winter food drive.

The Foodbank supports many local people though the colder months. This year, Kai for Octacan was held on the eve of the Matariki public holiday.

St Margaret’s members were asked to donate cans of food to the foodbank appeal. To provide an added incentive there was a floor competition, with chocolates for the floor that donated the most cans. CB/Thorpe House won by a narrow margin – well done to them.

It was fantastic to see one of St Margaret’s College’s three ‘Cs’ in action. With 144 cans donated, it really was ‘Consideration for Others’ in action. The Dean of Students delivered the five boxes of donated cans to the Octagon. They were added to the donated supply which was then arranged into the shape of the Matariki cluster, with each star representing a particular food group.

The Otago Daily Times also featured the Food Bank Appeal in an article on 24 June 2022. It can be viewed here: https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/stars-season

Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference.
