The application process

1

Submit an official University accommodation application

All applications for St Margaret's must be made online via eVision when enrolling for study at the University of Otago.

As part of this application process, you will need to arrange for your school to submit a confidential reference.

To access the eVision application process, visit the University of Otago's Student Accommodation page.

2

Complete an additional information form

As an independent college, St Margaret's requires some additional information during the application process. After you have submitted your official eVision application, we ask that you also complete our additional information form to assist us in the selection process.

Fill out the additional information form

* Please note: you must have submitted an official University accommodation application before completing the additional information form.

3

Receiving an offer

Applications should be submitted before the deadline stated by the University (usually around the end of September) and offers are usually emailed in the first week of October.

College places will continue to be offered between October and when University starts in February; however, applications made after the deadline will likely be placed on a waitlist.

* Please note: If your first preference is unable to make an offer, your application will be forwarded to other colleges with vacancies.

When to apply

As most places are offered during October, you should try and submit both your application and the additional information form by the end of September 2024. If you miss this deadline, you are still encouraged to apply; however, offers will only be made as space allows.

Your application must be for the full academic year, as we do not accept applications for single semesters. However, rooms may occasionally become available for the 2nd semester. If you would like to go on the waiting list for these rooms, please contact us.

Please do not post or email any items directly to St Margaret's, such as certificates or a curriculum vitae, unless we contact you to request such information.

College preferences

While prospective students are asked to indicate their top three college preferences when applying for accommodation at the University, there is no guarantee that they will be placed in one of those colleges.

The reasons for this are:

  • The various colleges are very popular and usually cannot accommodate everyone who has selected them as one of their preferences; and
  • Many other aspects form part of a college's decision-making process.

However, it's important to remember that all of Otago's colleges offer similarly high levels of pastoral care, tutorial support, and social/sport/cultural programmes. Indeed, they are all well-known for their excellent standards. The best college will be the one you are admitted to.
