Wellbeing and Pastoral Care

Support Within the College

All the staff at St Margaret’s College contribute to fostering a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. Our pastoral care team includes the Head of College, the Deputy Heads of College (Academic and Wellbeing), College Leaders, and our dedicated housekeeping, catering, and property staff. Together, they create a welcoming atmosphere where students can thrive academically, personally, and socially.

Each floor is supported by a College Leader (RA), who is available to assist with day-to-day concerns whether that means checking in on a minor health issue, offering a listening ear, or providing encouragement and practical advice. They are a key point of contact for Members and help foster a strong sense of community.

The Heads of College operate an open-door policy, ensuring students feel comfortable seeking help, whether for minor questions or more serious personal matters. If an issue requires specialist support, College staff will connect Members with the most appropriate University or community service.

University of Otago Support Services

St Margaret’s College works closely with the University of Otago’s extensive wellbeing network. Student Health Services (SHS), located on campus, offers high-quality care for both physical and mental health. Their team includes nurses, general practitioners, mental health clinicians, and administrative staff—all committed to supporting students in a safe, confidential, and culturally responsive environment.

The Intercollege Competition adds another layer of wellbeing by promoting connection, teamwork, and fun through sports, cultural events, and games. Designed specifically for first-year residential college students, it offers something for everyone while fostering friendships across the university community.

We also support the spiritual lives of our Members. St Margaret’s welcomes people of all faiths and beliefs, and we work closely with the University Chaplaincy team one of whom serves as our College Chaplain. Information about local churches and chaplaincy services is readily available, and returning Members are happy to help new students find spiritual communities that suit them.

Connecting with the wider community

Our commitment to wellbeing extends beyond the College gates. We encourage Members to engage with the wider Dunedin community through voluntary service, cultural groups, and leadership opportunities. These experiences foster a sense of purpose and belonging, helping students build resilience and a strong connection to place.
