Maximising opportunities

Thirteen St Margaret's recipients of the University's prestigious Entrance Scholarship attended a special function hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Harlene Hayne, on 8 August.

The purpose of the function was to highlight exciting opportunities available to students to help them make the most of their time during their years at the University.  As the Master of St Margaret's College, I felt immensely proud of our Members and was very pleased that I could take a photo of them together with the Vice-Chancellor.

During an uplifting and encouraging speech, Professor Hayne emphasised the importance of getting involved and also developing other areas of one's life while at University. Otago provided many such opportunities, for example, volunteering, leadership opportunities and international exchanges.

Professor Hayne ended her speech with a quote from Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover."

From left to right in the photo are: Angela Lim, Kate Heslop, Katja Brand, Bethany Cheesman, Emily Jiang, Rutvi Soni, Professor Harlene Hayne, Wanli Cheng, Anna Chen, Joyce Guo, Priya Patel, Isabella Barnett, Sera Rawson and Souhei Chan.
