College Member Alex Kay's three minute speech on the topic "A different way to be" was awarded first prize in the Communication Cup competition held at the College on Saturday, 27 July 2019.
Members were treated to eleven insightful and thought-provoking speeches by those participating in the annual Reynolds
Communication Cup competition last Saturday.
The Cup was very kindly donated by College Fellow Professor John Reynolds in 2009 and like the last two years, the competition took the form of a three-minute presentation on a topic of the Member's choice (anything they are passionate about). Only one PowerPoint slide was permitted.
The two professors who were invited to judge the presentations were Prof John Reynolds (Anatomy) and Assoc Prof Lisa McNeill (Marketing). A large audience of appreciative Members thoroughly enjoyed listening to the talks and voting for the Peoples' Choice Award.
The following Members, in order of presentation, participated in the event:
- Nicolas Smith: Missing people
- Chloe Hawthorn: The line between banter and bullying
- Thomas Powell: Better together - selflessness and co-operation in a time of selfishness and isolation
- Lakshmi Thillaikkannan: Imperfections aid in success
- Anna Domett: Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen
- Dineth Rajapakse: Why more people should do triathlons
- Dante Fouché: Cutting down our poppies
- Alex Kay: A different way to be
- William Wu: Roots
- Abigail Visser: Perfectionism
- Dikshya Parajuli: Standing for justice, striving for unity
The quality of the three-minute presentations was of a particularly high standard this year. All are to be congratulated for a top class effort.
The criteria the judges used to select the winner were:
- Communication style. Was the topic communicated well to the audience?
- Comprehension. Did the presentation help the audience understand the topic?
- Engagement. Was the audience left wanting to know more?
The judges provided constructive feedback to each presenter immediately following their respective talks.
After spending some time deliberating at the end of the event, the judges announced the following winners:
First place: Alex Kay
Runner up: Dante Fouché
Highly commended: William Wu
Peoples' Choice: Dikshya Parajuli
