St Margaret's College has won the University's 2018 Inter-college Cultural Competition. This fantastic result was announced at a special black-tie formal Awards Dinner attended by 270 people on Friday, 28 September.
The College was represented by 19 Members and the Master at the special event, making up two tables (the maximum permitted per college). When the College was announced as the overall winner or champion of the Cultural Competition towards the end of the evening, we all stood up, made much noise and clapped enthusiastically!
Our win turned a few heads, particularly as this is just the second year that we've participated in the Competition. It's a big deal for us, and as the Master I am so very proud of our Members.
The Cultural Representative on this year's Student Executive Committee, Loamé van Zyl, performed a wonderful job by encouraging many Members to take part in the various sections of the Cultural Competition: chess (1st place), quiz (1st place), debating (1st place), literary (1st
place), 48-hour film festival, Big Sing, international performance,
Māori and Pasifika Performance, gaming, pool, and visual arts. Thank you and congratulations everyone!
Achievement in sports was also recognised at the Awards Dinner, with Cumberland College taking the overall champion honours. Although St Margaret's did not win any of the sport sections we had excellent participation in the following sports: basketball, cricket, football, futsal and netball. My sincere thanks to our Sports Representative on the Student Executive Committee, Christian Edwin, for his hard work and sustained efforts throughout the year, and to all who played in or supported our sports teams.
The Awards Dinner was a marvellous affair and included a three-course waited meal. Very special too was the musical interlude performed by the Athenian Duo comprising St Margaret's Members Tessa Dalgety-Evans (bodhrán - Irish drum - and cello) and Devyn Fowles (violin), who played two delightful Irish pieces to a very appreciative audience.
Now to find a place to display all of those trophies and colours... What a nice problem to have!
