Two of the most important roles at St Margaret’s College are those of the College Leaders (formerly known as Welfare Staff) and the Members’ Executive Council. Each year many Members apply or campaign for one of these roles, which provide excellent leadership opportunity, but also the chance to give something back to the College.
Each year the eleven College Leaders are selected by a committee, made up of the Head of College and two members of the College Council, after an application and shortlisting process. One College Leader is assigned to each floor of the College, with the primary aim of supporting Members and providing pastoral care throughout the year. The College Leader team goes through a busy three week training prior to Arrival weekend to prepare for the role. This includes a six-day trip to Glendhu Bay, where the days were spent on a mixture of training and team bonding activities. Topics covered during the training this year included: professionalism & confidentiality, operational matters, health & safety, personal wellbeing & stress management, team effectiveness, communication skills and strength’s training. Several University services contributed to the training programme also, including The Chaplaincy and the Student Health Mental Health team.
The 2024 College Leader team is: Elizabeth Hanaray (CA), Shelby Thomson (CB), Caitlin Burkett (CC), Toby Ingold (CD), Sophie Yang (WA), Dafydd Spratt (WB), Zoë Jonson (RA), Genelle Ventura (RB), Katie Westphall (B), Benjosh Ananth (RC), and Isabella Cross (C).
The Member's Executive Committee consists of nine returning Members, elected by their peers near the end of the previous year, and two first-year Members, who are also elected by their peers, but in the current year. The Members Executive Committee hold the responsibility for the vast majority of the social programme throughout the year, including O-week and Re-O-week activities, theme dinners, mystery bus trip, the annual ball, the intercollege competition, and interfloor challenges, to name but a few.
