Expert Breakfast Report for 25 September 2019: Associate Professor Bruce Russell, Dept of Microbiology and Immunology

Prof Russell’s fascinating work on malaria - one of the major killers of humans world-wide - came as an addendum to his most serious concern, climate change (and a liberal sprinkling of engrossing anecdotes), then the two topics came together at the end with the case of the yellow-eyed penguin.

Voted Top Tutor in Health Sciences in the 2017 OUSA Teaching Excellence Awards, Paul Pearce is highly regarded by students, and in giving some insights to his personal story, he gave us a liberal sprinkling of fascinating - sometimes somewhat frightening - anecdotes, as well as his prediction for the Rugby World Cup result.

End-of-year departure date

All are reminded that at the end of the academic year in November, Members should leave 24 hours after their last exam or Sunday, 10 November 2019, whichever date is the earliest.

Such talent

Members were treated to the most amazing display of talent on the evening of Sunday, 8 September during the College's third annual Art Competition.

Mornington Club visits the College

It was a pleasure to host the Mornington Club at St Margaret’s College on Tuesday morning, 10 September 2019.

Following a recruitment and selection process, the College is pleased to announce the appointment of next year's 13 College Leaders.

That tree

"Nature bends under the force of man". This is the clever caption that College Leader Ashish Yadav entered in the recent Inter-college Literary Competition to accompany the above photograph of that famous tree in Lake Wanaka.

All aboard The Polar Express

The College's Annual Ball was held on Saturday, 17 August. The surprise venue was the wonderful, modern foyer area of Toitu Museum which included a real train, just perfect for The Polar Express theme for the evening.

Expert Breakfast Report for 14 August 2019: David Robinson, Coroner

After dispelling some of the misconceptions about coroners and outlining the work that they do, Coroner Robinson discussed some of the factors that affect society adversely, with some suggestions about how members could be involved in alleviating the situation of the less advantaged.

International Formal Dinner

Our annual International Dinner took place on Sunday, 11 August. We were treated to delicious food, entertaining performances, and fascinating guests.

Back to School Dinner

On Saturday, 27 July, the Norris Dining Hall was transformed into a classroom by the Student Executive for a wonderful "back to school" themed dinner.

Expert Breakfast Report for 31 July 2019: Dr Michael Cop, Dept of English and Linguistics

Originally on an athletic scholarship in Canada, Dr Cop became interested in literature and the English language at university, and, in a refreshingly interactive session, talked of research which aims to help improve teaching practice.

Expert Breakfast Report for 7 August 2019: Prof Nicola Peart, Faculty of Law

Professor Peart outlined her experiences with law in three countries before giving some advice applicable to all students - don’t be tied to your initial career choice and actively seek to broaden your horizons outside your main subject area.

Plenty of snow on ski trip

The first weekend of August was the perfect time for the College's annual ski trip as it coincided with a significant cold front which presented lots of fresh snow for our avid skiers and snowboarders.

Splendid Indian dance

College Leaders Abida Denny and Priya Patel performed beautifully at the University's Inter-college International Performance held in the Cameron Hall at Knox College on Sunday evening, 4 August 2019.

Badminton win for the College

St Margaret’s two teams played extremely well in the Inter-college Badminton Competition on Friday night, 2 August, to take both first and third places.
